For years now we have been passionately devoted to making Surf Hatteras an utterly unique experience in the realm of surfing and summer camps. So it feels pretty good to receive emails from parents and campers after every session who rave about their experience. Some even offer to write advertisements for us! The following are excerpts from a few of our favorite unsolicited emails:
Surf Hatteras Camp can easily be labeled as the best camp my son has ever attended. The Executive Director, Ross Byrd, takes it upon himself to see that every child at camp has the experience of a lifetime and makes each child feel special. Along with Ross, every single staff member shows an enthusiastic interest in each child and works with all of the kids and shows them a superb time as well as great surfing skills. My son said that every minute of every day was as fun as the last...there was never a dull moment and each day was packed full of surfing, fun and laughs. Beyond that, the food is prepared to suit even the pickiest eater, and, no surfer can go the beach without sunscreen which is a major plus in my book as well. The care and love shown to these campers is off the charts.
My son has made me promise that he can go back next summer...for AT LEAST one week! Thank you Surf Hatteras Camp for showing my son the best time of his life!
Chris just returned from camp yesterday and the first thing he said was, "Can I go back next year?" It is obvious from reading the innumerable testimonials that you all are doing something right. Rick and I were impressed with your home and camp accommodations. Everything was spotless. The daily blog was fun to keep up with and Chris is back with nothing but great things to say. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Kayla was so happy with your camp ranking it a 10! She has been telling us of all the special things that she enjoyed mentioning the music, tarp surfing, dune riding, nightly games, food and especially the surfing. She's already decided she's coming back and after her brother saw the awesome dvd he wants to come. The staff she said was great too! As a parent I enjoyed checking the blog each morning to see her. Thank you for making her experience terrific!
We just wanted to take a moment to let you know how much Asa enjoyed camp! He has attended many types of summer camps, from Traditional Camp to Space Camp to Extreme Adventure Camps, and usually he returns with a very un-enthused assessment of “it was ok”. This time, he called from the airport to make sure that we knew to “get him on the list” for next summer. He wants to come for two weeks, and coordinate those weeks with a few of the other campers that he met so they can all be together again. Every day he tells us another story about something cool that happened, or something funny that someone did. His summer really ended on a high note – so please share our thanks with everyone on your staff for making that happen. We will definitely see you guys again next year!

I have had you on my pending list to send you my warmest thanks for making Diego's summer such a memorable one - he absolutely loved his week with you all! Thank you again for creating such a homelike environment for kids like Diego to enjoy a week of surf and sun. You really have such a special thing going. I will surely spread the word for other families interested in such a unique experience!

Before I forget, I am back in my office after picking up Holden, Hannah and Sara from their week at your camp. I have to tell you that we weren't out of the parking lot of Freedom [Surf Shop] before all three kids told myself and my daughter that it was the BEST week of their lives…You folks made some impression. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the experience you gave these kids. Please know that Holden will be back next year for two weeks...
I have been wanting to tell you that Sarah had an amazing time. She LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the camp. She learned so much, had fun and enjoyed the yummy food. I appreciate that everyone was so kind to her. I was worried about her going but have no doubts about letting her join again next year…Sarah says Hello! She can't wait to come back next year.
Wanted to make sure my wife and I dropped you a line. Brian was so happy he attended the camp again this year, the two week stay was definitely the way to go. We live on the beach in Long Island with many fine surfers, he is holding his own with the best of them. This is a great way to allow him some independence while at the same time enjoying the experience of meeting new friends from around the country…Our best to your staff and your family, especially your beautiful daughter.
Dear Hannah and Ross, I just talked to Kara and she had the TIME OF HER LIFE. She said she had so much fun and that you both did such a great job in entertaining them and making them feel happy. She loved everything about the camp and said the counselors were all super and the other kids too. She even said that she thought not having the cell phones was a great idea because she did not think that they would have gotten to know each other as they did otherwise. So see, there is still hope for our teenagers. ;-) I want to thank you all for making this so much fun.
I know this is way overdue, but my wife and I wanted to thank you for the wonderful experience Emily had at Surf Camp this summer...You guys provided a great environment for her to experience surfing and being on her own with no family or friends. She came back confident, happy, and in love with surfing. She's already talking about going back again next year.
Hey this is Grant from week 7. Last week was so incredible, all I can think about is getting back in the water and surfing some more. Its so much fun and I cant get enough of it. I am extremely interested in coming down again for the winter session to surf some bigger waves and keep getting better. I was wondering if there are any spots available. Please let me know! :)
Warner and Parker both had an amazing time at camp. They enjoyed the surfing time they got in the water, loved the counselors and the great encouragement, instruction and tips they gave them. Even Hannah's cooking got praise!!! I know they are both heading back next year maybe even for two weeks!! We will be sure to get them signed up early so we are not frantically trying to fit them in. Nancy and I appreciate being able to check in on the computer every night and see the pictures of our boys. It was our highlight while they were away. Some great shots that we will cherish in their picture books.
The weeks spent with you, your staff and the rest of the campers has been the highlight of Nicole's summer and she is looking forward to attending this year. I also must add that I've heard and read nothing but great things about your program. Your philosophy seems to be able to blend a learning experience, fellowship and responsibility with a great time at the beach. Hopefully we'll have an opportunity to meet.
Thanks for the DVD! I’m glad Nathans doing well, he loves the camp and your crew, it’s honestly priceless and some of the best money spent! Hope that you get a good swell the rest of the week!
Margot had a fantastic time at your camp. My daughters have attended Billabong surf camps in Florida for several years in a row, and although the waves were maybe more challenging, your camp definitely was an overall better experience. She enjoyed that your camp was so well organized, that the kids were so nice and friendly, that there were always fun activities to do, that the staff was great, the house so nice and clean, and the food excellent. Margot couldn't stop ‘bragging’ about what a great time she had...she can't wait to come back next summer! Thank you for making her week at camp such a memorable experience!
I also wanted to take a moment to tell you how happy I am that I found Surf Hatteras. You couldn’t have given Dustin a better award than The Waterman…I don’t think anything makes him happier than being at the beach or in the pool...And I love the DVD. You guys are awesome. I sing your praises all year long. Hope to see you next year.
I just wanted to thank you for helping our son have such a great week at your surf camp this summer. The week was a great experience and truly a highlight for him this year. He probably watches the video once a week to relive the fun. He is looking forward to attending next summer and maybe in the Winter or Spring as well.

My daughter had a great time. On the way home, before we even left Virginia Beach, she was already talking about coming back next year! I was particularly pleased to learn that the campers had to clean the house where they stayed. Whenever we send her on a pricey adventure, I fear that the other kids will be rich brats and that she will pick up their attitudes and aspirations. Having everyone clean is a great way to nurture a sense of equality.
Can you please notify me when the 2012 sessions will be available for registration? Our Son Zach had such a great time that he is ready to come back! Thank you very much for taking good care him and he is looking forward to next year.

I just have to say that Trevor has thoroughly loved surfing this summer as a result of coming to your camp…He really has improved quite a bit and has loved every minute…I know he definitely wants to come back…
